Rob,

Another great podcast, keep them coming. I enjoy hearing the fire calls as much as I like hearing how your running is going.

I have definitely been sucked in by the social media outlets available that has allowed us to build up a virtual running community. I belong to a running club here in Texas but I feel like I "know" you, Dan, Nik, Steve Runner, Kelowna Gurl, Nigel, etc. better than some of the folks that I physically run with every weekend.

See you on the virtual roads.

Interesting topic.
Have you heard of "crossfit" training? I love it. It's great for endurance sports and for people who have jobs that are physical (military, firefighting etc.)
Here's one link (there are many more)

Hey U.D. sounds like you had a crazy day. It also sounds like you're turning into a part-time math teacher when you were going into the bit about the 40 firefighters and 35% response rate. The tricky part was when you were talking about how the rescue and duty firefighters contained some of the same people. Anyway, I started laughing on my walk home listening to all of that. I'm an engineer by training and I started seeing pie charts and Venn diagrams in my head.

You asked about methadone. You're right, it's used to help people with addictions to drugs like heroine. It prevents the heroine withdrawal symptoms that can be pretty severe. It doesn't have much of a high, so the woman that you helped was probably taking a lot of it to try to get high. It also can stick around in your body for a long time.

Anyway, you talked about those posters of people doing inspiring things. It's funny, but you inspire me ... and I'm sure other listeners feel the same way.

Just a note: You're right on your comments about methadone Rob. It's used for managing chronic pain and also used to maintenance heroin addicts because it acts on the same opiod receptors and behaves much like heroin even though it is not chemically like heroin. It lasts a long time and is relatively cheap.
Anyway, I listened to first half of podcast...saving some for another run. ;) (My runs have been short these past couple weeks.)

Ran across your podcast yesterday as I was looking for something new to listen too this week. Heard Runner+, looked you up, and here I am.

I got a kick out of the body type analysis. (I make the big 190 lb guy you were talking about look small. :) But hey, I run with the rest of y'all.

Cheers.

I'm already becoming a second-time commenter! Does that make me a recidivist? :-)

Thanks for the NYT caffeine link. Just a coffee-related question: Did you find, in your research, that the race-day benefits of using coffee (heightened alertness, more energy) apply equally to all? Is there an enhanced benefit for those who do not regularly use coffee? If we're regular users (like you and me), should we go coffee-free as part of a taper, and then have a cup pre-race?

Oh--one more thing. You keep talking about your "bat-belt"
(I use one too it's an amphipod air flow lite that I use for cell phone and pmp3 player and sometimes add amphipod single bottle holder) But, I don't think you have ever once told us what belt you use (brand--model) and what you like/don't like about it)
I want to know what belt you are using.

Just loving ultradad podcast!! I've been listening a while now so I thought I'd finally stop by to say hello.

I love it when a new ultradad podcast comes out--I can't wait to listen to it (during a run of course)--but then I have to wait for the next episode.;)

I'm a coffee loving runner with 6 kids so I love hearing about your kids too!

Thanks for the Wii fit review--I'm thinking about doing a wii and wii fit for one big family Christmas gift instead if gifts for each of us. I casually mentioned it and heard no protests, so I might do it.

keep podcasting PLeaaaaase ;)

Rob,
Great show and "Way to go Ethan!!!"

I love my Petzl lights. Good call on the flashlight. I never thought about it til you brought it up. Ran here this weekend (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snoqualmie_Tunnel). Flashlight was a good call. Trail hardpan gravel, flat, cold and damp. I was going to go and do the Spokane Half Marathon on the 12th but financially it costs to much to drive across the state. Decided to do the Lake Easton Trail run (http://adventureworksllc.com/Eventdetails.aspx). First real trail run for me. Looking forward to it.

Keep up the great work and see you on the trail!

I just love your podcast. I don't have children but I am so excited for your family as you adopt. Maybe someday I will be able to. I love to run too and I do a kid's program with girls to help them run a 5K. I am doing the Chicago Marathon and Ultra. It is only a 50K but maybe someday I will do a 50 miler like you. Have a super day!

Hey Ultradad - Just began listening to your podcast after it being plugged on Phedippdations, and it is great. I listened to 2 episodes this morning during a long run. It's like running with a friend next to me. I know how hard it must be doing a podcast, but I hope (selfishly) that you continue. I live just outside Birmingham, Alabama (USA) and have done 125 marathons/ultras. As I age, my favorite running is on trails surrounded by nature and now, a friendly podcast. Congratulations on your Stormy 50 finish, your podcast, and your well placed dedication to your family.

Hi, Ultradad,
I haven't yet listened to this show, but I've now played 3 of your back 'casts and I'm about to subscribe. I think it's a great show, so thanks for doing the work and putting them out for us to enjoy! I'm in the States, but I'm in the border region of Sarnia, ON/Port Huron, MI, so I pick up CBC, and run a half-marathon in London, ON each spring. Oh, and my wife and kids are always pulling out the SCTV DVDs. I'm not a real Canadian, but I'm a close neighbour, eh?
Oh, and I adopted an 8-year-old girl from Bulgaria a few years back.
Thanks again, and best wishes.

Just wanted to say I love your podcast...and congrats on your adoption! We brought home our fourth child, a beautiful baby girl, from China last September. It was an amazing, crazy, exhausting, beautiful and altogether zen experience. :)

My best friend adopted 3 children (ages 6, 8 and 13) from Ethiopia at the same time we were in China, so I know a little bit about the process there as well. Wonderful blessings to you and best of luck on your trip! I know the details are draining, but it is so worth it! Fingers crossed for a very speedy court date. All the best! Becky

After my first foray into ultras, i did not understand the time the body needs in order to recover. Push to hard too soon after and your body will not be happy. Dont be so concerned you haven't run much since the race. Your body will thank you.

I agree that the higher the high, the lower the low....if you don't have another goal or are putting all your eggs into one event as to be the thing that defines you. Even going into this last 50 miler, I mentally knew that I had 4 more marathons at least for the year for my own little self imposed challenge and that a 100 miler and a run across the country (maybe when the kids are grown!!) are still challenges ahead and what keeps me moving forward.

Guess the biggest thing i have learned this year out on the roads and trails is that it is not how fast or how far but that you are out there. As Emerson put it, "Be First a Good Animal."

I guess it's okay to say congratulations on the adoption! I know you and your family must be very happy. All the best with your trip over to take care of the details!

Ultradad,
Congratulations on getting through the first stage of your adoption. I know a few people that have adopted (some in multi-racial situations) and are some of the happiest families I've ever met. It's still early days mate and there are bound to be more 'hoops' for you to jump through. My best wishes that this all comes together for you.

Wanted to say big 'ups' to Ethan. Getting into running with his dad... fantastic!! My daughter is about to turn 2 and I hope we also have something like running to share in the future...

Did the Nike+ Human race here in Singapore last weekend. 11,000 starters, truly a great event. Lots of red shirts everywhere, amazing. A well run event in Singapore.

So what next for U.D?? Another ultra on the horizon??

Anyway, thanks for the thoughts, inspiration and companionship during my runs. Really enjoy the show and hope you keep it up.

All the best,
Apteryx in Singapore

I just noticed that the link I gave you had a good deal for women's non trail version of the 2130. To get a better price you would need to go back one version to the 2120 which you might not like as much but is less expensive.

I think $150 is crazy for running shoes. Good luck shopping.

Great podcast!

I find that I am often in synch with your podcasts, for instance once you stated it was 5:10 AM when you were recording and I glanced at my watch and it was 5:08 AM, and like yourself I got up late and had to cut my run short due to family. Also I just got a Nike plus and your comments were very helpful. Congratulations on the adoption, what an honorable and wonderful thing to do. One thing I do to cut the cost of running shoes is search on line for last year’s version of the shoe I like which is often steeply discounted. Here one result for the model you like with one good deal.

Thanks
