Episode 9: Beatin’ the Heat
Jul 2nd, 2008 by ultradad
Today I am running my first 30 miler in preparation for for Ultramarathon in August. During my run I try out Nuun Hydration Tablets and take my Salomon XT Wings for their first long run. The temperature during todays run is suppose to reach into the 90’s so I discuss the methods I employ to beat the heat.
TUNE Notes: I discuss the cancellation of the Western States 100 due to forest fires. It’s the first time in 35 years this race did not run.

Great show! Hope that poor dog of yours has recovered. Thanks for the mention and by the way, just to reiterate, the only reason I don’t pay much attention to the Ultranews is simply that it is ‘non-applicable’ on a tiny and remote Scottish island! Keep up the good work! Gordon
G’day Ultradad,
I found your runcasts the other day and liked them so much I listened to them all, except for eps 1 and 3 (I might get to them later). I’m not a runner but I play soccer and cycle when I can.
I’m very impressed that you can talk coherently and run at the same time, I definitely would struggle to do this, laps with the lads at the soccer club sees the talk diminish as the laps increase!
I liked your encounter with the llama, it was a great surprise after you had talked about dogs, bears and deer. Other moments that made me smile was the decision to get trail shoes after stubbing your toes for the umpteenth time, similar things have happened to me.
I had a look on goggle earth where you run, the area around Mission looks fantastic, with forests, mountains and rivers. It rekindled memories of when I did some runs around Sunshine Village twenty years ago, the mountains, flora and fauna were so different to that of my home in Adelaide, Australia.
Keep up the great work, I like the format of your podcast including the TUNEs section, I have no idea who you are talking about but I’m getting an education in ultras!
Cheers Andy
Another great podcast. Be careful wit Sorbitol. It is commonly used as a laxative. If you have too much, you will be running off the trail
I use the electrolyte powder from Presidents Choice. I add it to my water, it uses Aspartame as a sweetener and is fruit flavoured. I use ClifShot Bloks for my Carbs. I can’t do Gels and I definately can’t do Gatorade.
Well done on the 30 miler! Is your race coming up very soon? (good podcast)
